FIESTA MOROS AND CRISTIANOS IN SANTA POLA.
What is this festival, popular not only in Spain, but also in South America and Asia?
It celebrates the victory of the Christians over the Moors and their expulsion from the Iberian Peninsula.
The festivities last for several days. The capture of the city by the Muslims is staged, followed by the battle and its recapture by the Christians.
They are very colourful and each side wears beautiful costumes.
The Moors wear richly decorated robes reminiscent of ancient Arabian costumes. The Christians wear furs, helmets and clothes inspired by medieval fashion.
Participants ride horses and sometimes camels.
Everything is accompanied by gunfire, fireworks and music.
Very often these celebrations are combined with the town's patronal celebrations.
The highly theatrical setting of the festivities attracts tourists, who often come especially to see what a real Spanish fiesta looks like.
Today - 3 September at 8.30 p.m. - the festive parade begins in Santa Pola, starting at Palmeral Park.
The colourful parade is not all, there will also be fireworks, dancing, flower-laying, a procession to the patron saint and games for children. The festivities will last until 8 September.
